GREENE COUNTY…east of Dayton
History tells us that many stations of the Underground Railroad were scattered
throughout Greene County where a countless number were given refuge. The
county is now a combination of urban vitality and rural charm. There is
an abundance of open spaces, thousands of acres of beautiful parks, reserves,
and wetlands. This natural environment provides the perfect outdoor setting
for biking, hiking, canoeing, camping, golf, skiing, sledding, bird watching,
and skydiving.
Beavercreek has been a fast growing community
with a wide-range of attractive residential neighborhoods. There is a lifestyle
here for everyone. Shoppers are attracted by its many distinctive stores
and the impressive Mall at Fairfield Commons. The great number and excellent
choices of restaurants draw many to the city.
Fairborn, until 1950, was once two villages,
Fairfield and Osborn.
It is a blend of small town and metropolis where a strong sense of community
is felt.
Xenia derives its name from the Greek and means
“hospitality“; it strives to live up to its name. Being the
center of miles and miles of biking and hiking trails winding throughout
the valley, it is called the “HUB.” All trails intersect at
the Xenia Station, a reproduction of an old railroad telegraph building.
Next to Xenia is Wilberforce, a very small city
with historical significance. Wilberforce University founded in 1856 is
the oldest private African-American university in the United States.
Bellbrook is truly a city with a touch of country
charm. The downtown is the “old village area,” now a business
district with restaurants and shops. Well-planned neighborhoods surround
the area. When Mr. Bell founded Bellbrook, he thrilled to the three “brooks”
running through and around the village, Little Sugarcreek, Sugarcreek,
and Little Miami Rivers. They beautifully enhance the local scenery.
Yellow Springs is a small village, culturally
diverse, and represents a wide range of political and social views. It
is noted for Antioch College, a small, private, progressive, free-spirited
school. Part of the College is the Glen Helen Nature Preserve which has
over 1000 acres of trails, springs, waterfalls, limestone cliffs, and forests.
Other wondrous natural and scenic areas are Clifton Gorge State Nature
Preserve and John Bryan State Park.
Jamestown, Cedarville,
Clifton, and Spring Valley
are small rural communities and each presents its own distinct character.
