districts, many landmarks, architectural beauties, museums filled with
artifacts, and natural reserves for future generations to learn and enjoy.
The area boasts an abundance of green space, fields, rolling hills, and
running streams. Now, today, throughout Montgomery County, communities
and neighborhoods, ranging from the most active to the most quiet, have
evolved with their own distinctive flare and attitudes.
Dayton is to the world the birthplace of aviation.
The “Wright Brothers” are DAYTON.
It was home to Paul Lawrence Dunbar, a literary great best known for his
poetry…classmate and friend of Orville Wright. The city is surrounded
by neighborhoods which have been designated as historical districts because
of architectural significance. The proud mix of history and innovation
radiates throughout. The city, a megalopolis, with its parade of unique
and diverse neighborhoods, has a bit of everything. Downtown Dayton is
absolutely amazing with a story of its own.
Kettering…hometown living at its best…projects
the same spirit as its founders and forefathers…John H. Patterson
(creator of modern salesmanship), Charles F. Kettering (philanthropist
& inventor), and Col. Edward A. Deeds (industrialist). The city has
a host of inviting, warm, and friendly neighborhoods ranging from quaint
to grand. Fine restaurants, abundant shopping choices, and beautiful recreational
parks entice many to the city. Kettering Recreation Center/Complex is a
significant component of the community. The Center has something for everyone
from infants to senior adults offering a countless list of programs and
activities…including the Water Raves Water Park and Ice Arena. This
town is active, active, and active.
Centerville/Washington Township…always
warm and cheerful…has an interweaving tapestry of past and present…has
plenty of lore and legend…is committed to preserving and restoring
its early American heritage. It is a community expressing togetherness
in its involvement and dedication to creating an
exceptional place to live and visit. The city offers delightful neighborhoods,
outstanding park districts, an array of shopping and restaurants. Washington
Township Recreation Center offers thousands of programs and recreational
opportunities for everyone. The Center includes a natatorium, two indoor
pools, 140 foot water flume slide, climbing wall…and more. The Children’s
Theatre Program for performing arts involves the entire community…children,
families, volunteers. Performances are held at the historic Town Hall.
Miamisburg…The Burg…has a historic
downtown that gives the illusion of stepping back in time. The community
is close-knit and proud of its heritage. This vibrant city with a small-town
atmosphere has a little of everything including the Market Square District
and the popular Hamburger Wagon (1913).
West Carrollton offers the best of urban life
in a small town atmosphere. Beautiful parks and pleasant neighborhoods
make this a special place.
Moraine…once the western tip of Kettering…is
a small proud city. Moraine has many parks and recreational facilities
including Splash (wavepool water park), Payne Recreation Center, plus a
51 acre nature preserve.
Oakwood has found prominence through its consistent
prosperity. In 1913, the year of the Dayton flood, the property on the
hill…promoted as a special place…was 275 feet higher than Third
and Main. The city has strong links to memories of the past, many being
connected to famous people who lived there and to its historical homes.
Fine homes, quaint shops and restaurants, spectacular gardens, and parks
adorn this area.
Huber Heights is a city that, after World
War II, was described as a satellite “bedroom” community, and
due to that fact no clearly defined downtown was developed. However, the
city has its individual identity with a variety of neighborhoods, shopping
plazas, and restaurants.
Trotwood is named for
Betsy Trotwood, a character in David Copperfield. The city offers a mix
of neighborhoods and beautiful city parks. Sycamore State Park has a great
number of natural features; and, it is a popular local area for horseback
riding, cycling, hiking, bird watching, camping, cross country skiing,
snowmobiling, and more. Trotwood’s Hara Arena is home to the Dayton
Jets professional basketball team providing entertainment to its fans.
Riverside has homey neighborhoods and plenty
of shopping and dining choices. The Eastwood Lake and Park recreation area
is a popular site where many enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, and picnicking.
Vandalia is a one-of-a-kind city. First, it
adjoins the interchange of I-70 and I-75 and the Dayton International Airport;
its location makes it “The Crossroads of America.” Every year
crowds arrive in droves to check-out the Grand American World Trapshooting
Championship, the United States Air and Trade Show, and the Hamvention.
There is an appealing variety of neighborhoods, new and old.
Englewood…early
on…attracted residents to its fertile farmlands, forests, and waters…Stillwater
River. There are acres of recreational trails and beautiful parks. The
village has welcoming, cozy neighborhoods and an attractive downtown. Adjoining
Englewood is Clayton, an inviting, growing community.
Germantown…where German was spoken until
the early 1900’s…was settled in 1804 by German-speaking families
led by Phillip Gunckel. This quiet little village sparkles with energy
and twinkles with calm. Germantown comes with a grand historical hotel,
The Florentine, and a restored covered bridge. Its school system is called
Valley View and includes its neighbor the Farmersville’s
district. It is a working commuter’s haven.
